  • One year out of MEST (Meltwater School of Technology), I’m still learning a lot (yes, with a lot, not alot). But a question that constantly pops into my head, and probably yours too if you’re considering MEST, is: what exactly do you learn there?

Sure, MEST is a fantastic opportunity – a chance to soak up knowledge like a sponge. You’ll gain marketable tech skills and, yes, potentially get funding for your dream startup. But trust me, MEST is about so much more than that. It’s about discovering yourself.

This might sound cheesy, but hear me out. In the words of Eric Nsarkoh says, “the dots only connect backwards.” Looking back, I realize MEST was designed to give us a year of undistracted self-discovery. In our busy world, future Africa-problem-solvers need a hero’s moment to breathe deeply and figure out their path.

Most people come to MEST for the tech skills and funding – it’s what’s advertised, and it’s real. But the “easy ride” mentality can hinder your experience. The real magic happens when you embrace the learning mindset.

The MEST Mindset: It's About You

What truly blew my mind at MEST was the focus on self-discovery. One activity that stuck with me is the weekly reflection session. It’s a dedicated time to assess your progress, identify areas for improvement, and brainstorm “how can I be better?” sessions these days often lead me to ask, “How can I create a better life for Africa?” or “How can I make Africa an economic powerhouse?”

MEST is incredibly generous (generosity being a core MEST value) considering the value you’ll bring to Africa. It allows you to step back, observe the challenges around you, and ponder solutions. There are countless problems begging to be solved – the pressure shouldn’t be on how quickly you monetize, but on solving the problem itself. The Bet, Buy, Barter (BBB) challenge is a great example: you might not hit the monetization jackpot on your first try, but you’ll learn to find new, sustainable solutions. Solve first, monetize later.

    The MEST Network: Your Superpower

A year abroad at MEST teaches you the power of networking. You’ll make friends, build connections, and realize everyone is somehow connected. In a world of “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” the ability to say “I know someone who can help” is a superpower. So, network with everyone – from the gatekeeper to the trotro driver, even your barber. You’ll be surprised by what you learn.

The MEST Hustle: Work Hard, Play Hard

Finally, a word to the wise: MEST is intense but incredibly rewarding. Here’s the secret: it’s not all work and no play. Make time to exercise, relax, laugh, and don’t take yourself too seriously. In my 2023 cohort, I was known as the life of the party (partly because I’m Ugandan, where the party never sleeps, but mostly because) I realized keeping the mood light was crucial. Entrepreneurs facing immense pressure need an outlet to unwind and recharge. As Samuel Darko says, “Take care of your health. If you are tired, stop and reset, or else you will be stopped.”

So, is MEST for you? If you’re looking for an adventure that will challenge you, teach you valuable tech skills, and help you discover who you are, then the answer is a resounding yes!
